Recovery is Not What Happens When You Stop: A Conversation with Marco Gentile

At Grooni Wellness, we believe that true recovery isn’t passive—it’s a conscious practice. To dive deeper into the science of cellular health and systemic recovery, we sat down with our partner, Marco Gentile.
Marco’s journey is as impressive as his insights. From managing 500-guest retreats in Bali to directing premier wellness clubs in Los Angeles, he has become one of the most respected voices in PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy. Today, we discuss how to bridge the gap between ancient healing arts and modern recovery technology.
Q01 — The Journey
Marco, you've managed a 500-guest yoga retreat in Bali, directed a premier wellness club in LA, and are now one of the most-read voices on PEMF therapy online. How did a spa and wellness career lead you to electromagnetic therapy?
Great question, I always had a strong interest in the healing arts and the ancient world of eastern medicine, this passion led me to learn and experience many different doctrines and therapies, and of course, guide others to transformational journeys.
Because of all that, I discovered that most of the healing process stemmed from energetic exchange, so when I found out how PEMF works, it was a simple, direct and efficient choice for my clients and me to get better and improve our well-being.
Q02 — The Science, Simply Explained
Most people have never heard of PEMF. What is actually happening inside the body during a session — and why does it matter for how we recover?
A few years ago, I had a friend who trained like a beast, lifting, running, the whole deal, but he recovered like a potato. Always sore, always tight, always saying, “I just need more sleep.” One day he tried a PEMF session when he visited me in LA, mostly out of curiosity. He came out and said, “I don’t feel hyped… I just feel… normal again.” The next day? No usual stiffness, no dragging himself out of bed. That’s when he got hooked.
In your body everything runs on electrical charges, our cells use them to move nutrients in, push waste out etc. When you are injured or inflamed this process slows down, PEMF Therapy sends electromagnetic waves into the body, the waves interact with these cells and restore normal function. As simple as that.
Q03 — Filling the Gaps
Sleep, nutrition, movement, stress management — most people know these are important. Where does PEMF fit into that picture, and what can it support that lifestyle habits alone can't fully reach?
As we know these are the pillars for wellbeing, balance and longevity but it is not always enough to stay on track specially with our busy lifestyle. PEMF can help fill in the gaps, either optimizing your sleep if you are having a hard time relaxing or speed up the recovery process of your muscles after an intense workout. There is always a way to integrate this special tool in your routine.

Q04 — The "Wellness Smoothie"
PEMF is often combined with far infrared heat, red light, and negative ions. For someone trying to understand what each one contributes — can you walk us through it simply?
It’s a fair question, because at first, it really can sound like a wellness smoothie with too many ingredients.
PEMF and Red LIGHT Therapy helps the cells produce energy and repair, Infrared heat is promoting circulation in your body, loosening things up and getting blood flowing and the Negative Ions Therapy is calming your system down so you can be able to switch to a healing state. On their own, each does something useful, but together, they help your whole system recover in sync instead of in pieces.
Q05 — The Role of Cortisol
Cortisol is something you talk about at length in your recovery protocol. Most people think of it as a stress hormone — but how does it actually affect physical recovery, and what can help bring it down after a hard day or training session?
Cortisol is basically your “go mode” hormone. Super useful for training, stress, getting things done, but if it stays high all day, your body never fully switches into repair mode. That’s when recovery feels off: sleep is shallow, muscles don’t rebuild well, and you wake up still kinda “on.”
To bring it down try slow breathing after training, eat something soon after, dim lights at night, and actually chill for a bit instead of jumping straight into more stimulation. It’s really just about helping your body hit the off switch so it can actually recover.
Q06 — What to Look For
For someone considering a PEMF mat for the first time, what are the features that genuinely matter, and what should they not let distract them?
If you are approaching PEMF for the very first time, my advice is not to get distracted by the bells and whistles of the market nowadays, there is so much smoke out there that can steer you away from what really matters and what you really NEED.
Just opt for a reliable device that can deliver the protocols you need, look for a mat that lets you adjust the frequency and choose between many programs. Either if you need it for sleep, sport recovery or relaxation for example. Then decide if you need a mat, a chair-mat or a wearable device, depending on your goals. Finally look for warranty and price point, you should be able to draw an educated conclusion by putting these answers together.
Q07 — Building the Protocol
You wrote that most people have recovery completely wrong – treating it as what happens when they stop, rather than something they actively build. For someone starting from zero, what does a realistic first month look like?
Most people think recovery is what happens when they finally stop pushing, but in reality, it’s something you build a little bit every day, and the first month is less about doing more and more about creating space to actually feel what’s going on.
Week One: You want to take it easy and notice your body quiet down, eat real unprocessed whole food, maybe some intentional meditation walks.
Week Two: You want to add some dietary supplements, start a daily stretching routine at the end of the day, and get off screens before bed.
Week Three & Four: It begins to click: simple daily actions take shape, you will pay attention to what works and what not, what gives you energy and what drains your body.
Recovery stops being a task in your life and becomes the way you live.

Q08 — Timing Your Sessions
Does it matter when during the day someone uses a PEMF mat — and should the approach be different on training days versus rest days?
Generally speaking, you could set the protocols and intensity based on the goal you have for the day. It is important to consider the kind of day you just had and keep your focus on what tomorrow is going to bring to your table. In other words, recover when you need it and take it easy when you can!
Q09 — The Secret to Transformation
You've worked with clients at the highest level of wellness. What separates the people who genuinely transform their health from those who invest in the right tools and still don't see results?
As Virgil said, “the greatest wealth is health.” It takes a great deal of commitment, patience and perseverance to achieve great results, some individuals believe in the process and others just play around a bit, perhaps they buy a bunch of devices like a sauna or a cold plunge because it looks cool on their outdoor patio but they never make their wellness part of their routine.
Q10 — Looking Ahead
Where is PEMF and recovery technology heading — and what should someone who wants to invest wisely in their long-term wellness understand about where things are going?
After so many years in the industry I can tell you for sure that the direction we are heading is actually pretty clear once you zoom out: it’s moving from “devices you use when you feel bad” to “systems you build into how you live.”
Everything is giving the right signals that as human beings, we are learning how to adapt to this society and these stressors, it is a survival reaction. Soon we will learn patterns, we will know what works and what not, we will adapt data to bio-markers and bio-regulation, we will stack protocols and routines, compare HRV and sleep patterns…and much, much more. More will come, just wait!
