What PEMF therapy actually is — and what it isn't
Most people don't buy a PEMF mat because nobody explains it honestly. So here it is: what the technology does, what you'll feel, whether it's safe, what the research really shows, and where the evidence runs out.

01 · The basics
A magnetic pulse, repeated at a set speed
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. Inside the mat are copper coils — the "cores." Run current through a coil and it creates a magnetic field. Switch that current on and off many times a second and the field pulses. That's the whole mechanism.
Frequency — hertz (Hz)
How many pulses per second. Low frequencies are used for winding down, higher frequencies after physical effort. This is what the preset programs change.
Intensity — gauss (G)
How strong the field is. Home wellness mats sit at the low end, a few gauss. Clinic machines run far higher and are used under supervision.
02 · Why PEMF is different
Light stops. Heat slows. A magnetic field passes through.
This is the single most useful thing to understand about PEMF, and it explains why a mat combines several technologies rather than just one.

Red light is absorbed in the first few millimetres of skin. Infrared heat warms tissue a few centimetres deep. A magnetic field isn't absorbed by tissue at all — skin, fat, muscle and bone are effectively transparent to it, which is why PEMF can reach a hip joint that heat never gets near.
It's also why the mats layer technologies. Each one works at a different depth, and none of them replaces the others.
03 · What to expect
What a session actually feels like
Most people expect a buzz or a tingle. You won't get one — and that's exactly how it should be.
What you will feel is the warmth. Far-infrared heat is the part your body registers: muscles soften, shoulders drop, and most people are noticeably relaxed before the timer runs out.
The magnetic pulse itself is silent. At wellness intensities it produces no sensation at all — nothing to brace against, nothing to get used to. That's by design, and it's one of the reasons a daily session is easy to keep up.

04 · Safety
Is PEMF safe?
For most people, yes — it's non-invasive, there's nothing to absorb or ingest, and decades of clinical use sit behind the technology. There are a few people who should check first, and we've listed them below.
If you've been careful about electromagnetic exposure at home, it's reasonable to ask how PEMF fits in. The short version: the electromagnetic spectrum is enormous, and where something sits on it matters far more than the label "EMF." PEMF operates at the extremely low-frequency, non-ionising end — low energy, closer in character to the Earth's own magnetic field than to anything at the high-energy end of the scale.
One distinction worth knowing, because brands blur it: "low EMF" on a mat spec sheet refers to the stray emissions every electronic device produces from its wiring and controller — not the therapeutic pulse. Good shielding reduces the incidental fields while leaving the useful ones intact.
Who should check before using one
Not suitable
- A pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device
- An implanted medication pump
Ask your clinician first
- Pregnancy
- Undergoing cancer treatment
- Epilepsy or a seizure disorder
- A recent transplant, or immunosuppressant medication
Beyond that list, most people can use a mat daily without issue. If you're managing a diagnosed condition or taking regular medication, a quick word with your clinician is always sensible — a wellness mat sits alongside your care, it doesn't replace any of it.
05 · The part nobody publishes
What the research actually shows
Most of what you'll read about PEMF online is written by people selling PEMF. So here it is sorted honestly — three tiers, strongest first.
Bone healing — non-union fractures
StrongestWhere PEMF began clinically, and the only PEMF category with FDA clearance. Important caveat: those are prescription medical devices in a different regulatory class. No consumer wellness mat — ours included — is cleared for this.
Winding down before sleep
StrongestWorth separating out carefully, because the honest answer is more interesting than the marketing one. Evidence for PEMF and sleep is thin. Evidence for passive warming before bed is not — meta-analyses of body-heating studies find people fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly when the warming happens one to two hours before bed. The mechanism is well understood: warming the skin drives the drop in core body temperature that sleep onset depends on.
That's exactly what far-infrared heat does, and it's the part of a mat with the best sleep evidence behind it. The gemstone layer matters here too, though not for the reasons usually claimed — heated minerals absorb and re-emit infrared, which gives a steady, even warmth instead of an element cycling hot and cold. So if sleep is your goal, the heat is doing most of the work, and that part is genuinely well supported.
Knee osteoarthritis — pain
StrongestA Cochrane review of nine randomised trials found a real but modest benefit for pain versus placebo. The same review found no significant improvement in physical function or quality of life, and later reviews call the picture contested.
Chronic low back and neck pain
ModerateReviews report modest benefit, but the underlying studies are small and of low methodological quality. Promising rather than proven.
Post-exercise soreness and recovery
ModerateA small number of trials show modest improvements in soreness. Much of what's claimed here rests on user reports rather than controlled data.
Fibromyalgia and migraine
Almost no dataPlacebo-controlled trials have largely come back negative. One review looking specifically at whole-body PEMF mats concluded they couldn't be recommended on the available evidence. Some people do report benefit, but the controlled data doesn't support a promise.
"Detox," lymphatic drainage, immune boosting
Almost no dataNo controlled evidence. We don't make these claims, and we'd suggest discounting brands that do.
06 · Frequency ranges
What the settings actually mean
Grooni mats group their presets into four ranges, each named after the brainwave band it sits in. Faster pulses, more active range.
Brainwave naming is a convention for grouping frequencies. It does not mean the mat is altering your brainwaves.
07 · How to use it
Dose, timing, and when to judge it
Start with 20 minutes, once a day
Sessions typically run 15–40 minutes. Twenty is a sensible starting point. Fully clothed is fine — a magnetic field passes through fabric.
Match the program to the time of day
Low frequencies in the evening, higher frequencies earlier or after physical effort. An energising program at bedtime works against you.
If you're sensitive, start lower and shorter
People with hypersensitivity conditions sometimes find higher intensities over-stimulating. Begin at the gentlest setting for 10 minutes and build from there.
Consistency beats intensity
Daily use at a moderate setting does more than occasional use at the maximum. The most common reason a mat "doesn't work" is that it stopped being used by week three.
Judge it at six weeks, not six days
Measure something on day one — minutes of morning stiffness, your sleep score, a 0–10 comfort rating — then check the same thing at two weeks and six weeks. Without a baseline you're relying on memory.
08 · Buyer's guide
How to read any brand's spec sheet
PEMF specs are quoted in incompatible units, which makes comparison shopping nearly impossible. Start by converting everything to one unit.
1 · Is the intensity in gauss, microtesla or milligauss?
They differ by orders of magnitude. A brand quoting "0.5 milligauss" is not describing therapeutic output — that's almost certainly a stray-EMF safety figure presented as if it were field strength.
2 · Where was it measured?
Field strength falls off fast with distance. A number measured at the coil is far higher than the same mat measured at the surface, where your body actually is. If a brand doesn't say where they measured, the number tells you nothing.
3 · At what frequency, and how many coils were firing?
Output varies with both. On most mats the field also changes with how many cores are active at once, because the power supply is shared between them. A single peak number hides all of this. Ask for a table, not a headline.
4 · Are more cores actually better?
More cores means wider coverage — more of your body inside the field. It does not automatically mean a stronger field; sharing one power supply across more coils generally means less intensity per coil. Wider and gentler, or narrower and stronger, is a genuine trade-off. Choose based on whether your issue is one spot or all over.
5 · What waveform?
A sine wave rises and falls smoothly. Square-wave devices switch abruptly, which some people find sharper. Neither is dangerous at these intensities, but it changes how a session feels — worth knowing if you're sensitive.
6 · Watch out for "FDA approved"
No consumer PEMF wellness mat is FDA approved or FDA cleared. The only cleared PEMF devices are prescription bone growth stimulators. Wellness mats operate under FDA's general wellness policy, which permits general wellbeing claims and prohibits disease claims. A brand claiming clearance — or using "medical grade" to imply it — is telling you something about how they handle facts.

10 · Glossary
Every term, plainly defined
If a brand uses a word you don't recognise, it's here.
- ATP
- Adenosine triphosphate — the molecule cells use to store and move energy. Often cited in PEMF marketing; the lab research is real, the leap to "more energy for you" is not established.
- Bian stone
- A stone used in traditional Chinese practice, included in some mats for its infrared properties. No clinical evidence base.
- Coil / core
- The wound copper element that generates the magnetic field. "12 cores" means twelve of them spaced across the mat.
- Delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma
- Names for bands of the brainwave frequency spectrum, from slowest to fastest. Used as convenient labels for PEMF frequency ranges.
- EMF
- Electromagnetic field. Covers everything from the Earth's own field to Wi-Fi to X-rays, which is why the term alone tells you very little without a frequency and an intensity.
- Far infrared
- The long-wavelength end of infrared light, experienced as radiant heat. Warms tissue a few centimetres deep.
- FDA cleared vs approved
- "Cleared" means a 510(k) submission showed equivalence to an existing device. "Approved" is a higher bar. No consumer PEMF mat has either.
- Frequency (Hz)
- Pulses per second. 10 Hz means the field switches on and off ten times a second.
- Gauss (G) / tesla (T)
- Units of magnetic field strength. 1 gauss = 100 microtesla = 1,000 milligauss. Always check which unit a brand is using.
- General wellness device
- An FDA category for low-risk products that may make general wellbeing claims but must not claim to treat, cure or prevent disease. Every consumer PEMF mat sits here.
- Ionising vs non-ionising
- Ionising radiation (X-rays, gamma) carries enough energy per photon to damage DNA. PEMF is non-ionising and sits at the opposite end of the spectrum.
- Negative ions
- Charged air particles emitted by some heated minerals. Widely marketed, thinly evidenced.
- PEMF
- Pulsed electromagnetic field. A magnetic field switched on and off at a set rate.
- Photobiomodulation
- The technical term for red and near-infrared light therapy — light absorbed by cells rather than felt as heat.
- Schumann resonance
- A natural electromagnetic resonance of the Earth's atmosphere, around 7.83 Hz. Some grounding presets are tuned to it.
- Sine wave / square wave
- The shape of the pulse. A sine wave rises and falls smoothly; a square wave switches abruptly. Affects how a session feels.
- Sham control
- In a trial, a device that looks identical but does nothing. Essential for separating real effect from placebo — and hard to do well with an imperceptible therapy.
- Waveform
- The overall shape of the pulse over time — sine, square, sawtooth. One of the specs that varies most between brands and is disclosed least.
11 · Questions
Straight answers
How long until I notice anything?
Many people notice relaxation from a session immediately, largely because of the infrared heat. Anything cumulative takes consistent use over weeks. Set a six-week checkpoint, measure something at the start, and be prepared for the answer to be "not for me" — that's what the 60-day return window is for.
Can I sleep on it all night?
The mat has an auto shut-off, and there are low-frequency programs designed for extended use. Check the manual for your model rather than assuming — and don't run an energising program overnight.
Does it work through clothes and blankets?
PEMF does — a magnetic field passes through fabric. Infrared heat works better with less between you and the surface. Red light needs direct skin contact and will not pass through clothing.
Is it the same as a heating pad?
No, though they overlap. A heating pad gives you heat only. A PEMF mat with infrared gives you heat plus a pulsed magnetic field. If all you want is warmth, a heating pad is far cheaper and we'd rather tell you that.
Can more than one person use it?
Yes — one at a time. Check the contraindications in section 04 for everyone who plans to use it, and check with a clinician before using it with children or anyone managing a health condition.
